16th Middlesex of 100 Brigade, 33rd Division arrived in France in November, 1915 and in January, 1916, after a period of trench instruction, they moved to the Annequin North sector of the front, close to Bethune and with battalion HQ at Beuvry. They remained here for the first 4 months of 1916 with alternating periods in the front line, support trenches and in reserve. Their first spell in the front line trenches was between 4th and 14th January, 1916 and whilst there, Stuart Monks was killed in action on 5th January, probably from shell fire which accounted for 60% of all deaths on the Western Front. |
